Whipped cream from scratch is soooooo much better than from a can. If you haven’t tried making it yet, it is well worth the small amount of effort. I have two different easy ways to make whipped cream- both mom and kid approved. Give it a try!!

Things to know about whipped cream
You’ll want to start with heavy whipping cream. You don’t need a recipe, but it is good to know that cream will double when whipped. So, for example, if you want 2 cups of whipped cream, start with 1 cup heavy whipping cream!
You can absolutely skip this step, and to tell you the truth, I usually do, but if you have the time, its best to chill your bowl or jar for about 15 minutes before whipping your cream.
There are countless ways to sweeten and flavor whipped cream. Get creative! Some of my favorite ways are
- classic- vanilla extract and powdered sugar
- peppermint- peppermint extract and powdered sugar
- maple- maple syrup
You can use granulated sugar, but you’ll be able to feel the granules. Powdered sugar (also known as confectioners sugar) will give a smoother finish.
The first way…

Keep in mind how much whipped cream you’ll want to end up with and pour half that amount of heavy whipping cream into a bowl- chilled if you like.
Using a stand mixer with the whisk attachment or handheld mixer (or even just a hand whisk, though it will take longer) and beat the cream! Start at a medium-low speed to incorporate the sweetener and flavor of your choice. Build up to a medium-high speed, but as peaks begin to form I like to slow my speed again. It is very easy to over-whip. My number one tip to avoid over-whipped cream is do not walk away! The consistency can change very quickly. When you’ve reached medium-stiff peaks, you’re done! If your cream looks lumpy and continues to clump the more you whisk, you’ve gone too far. Spoon or pipe it onto anything you would like!

The second way…
For this method I do recommend chilling your jar to combat the warmth from your hands.

Fill a jar about half full with heavy whipping cream, add in your sweetener and flavor, and SHAKE!! Shake shake shake that jar quickly and continuously. You’ll be able to feel and hear the cream splashing around inside. When you can’t hear the liquid any more, you’ll know its done.
Again, WAY better than the stuff in a can. Easy to make and it really elevates any dessert. And what a sweet memory to have… “we used to make whipped cream by shaking it in a jar!”
Enjoy!
