Kids love playdough!! Right?!! And who can blame them?! Playdough is fun!! And this version is fun even for the youngest family members. Try this homemade, taste safe playdough for some open ended sensory play for all ages.
Why taste safe?
Now, to be clear, “taste safe” doesn’t mean that we want the kids snacking on it. Taste safe means that if someone does eat a little, they wont get sick. This recipe doesn’t taste good so its the perfect opportunity for to teach little ones not to eat playdough in a safe environment. Even my 13 month old gets to play (with supervision of course)!
Ingredients

1 cup water
2 Tbsp oil (olive oil or vegetable oil)
essential oils (optional)
food coloring (optional)
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
How to make homemade, taste safe playdough

First mix the water, oil, and food coloring in a bowl. If you’re adding essential oils, do it now! 10-15 drops will leave a mild scent but feel free to add more if you like!
Next, put your dry ingredients into a saucepan. Add the wet ingredients and stir until combined.

Cook on medium-high heat stirring constantly until a ball forms.

Tip the playdough ball out onto parachment paper and let it cool. When cool enough to handle, knead the dough until smooth.

There you have it!! Set up a sensory tray with some toys, cookie cutters, or even some sticks or flowers from the yard, or use the playdough to sculpt or practice letters . So many great ways to play!

Tips
I have flour that I use for cooking and separate, all purpose flour that I use to make playdough. Same goes for salt. No need to use your good ingredients on this.
Any food coloring will work, but if you’re hoping for more vibrant colors, use gel food coloring. This is the one I use.
For a more natural food coloring option, try these! The color isn’t as vibrant, but the natural colors are so pretty.

What a creative and fun website for all to enjoy! It’s such an inviting website with the colors and layout design. So much so that playdough is our next home project!
Great job!
